WHAT

HTML5

is being developed as the next major revision of HTML, the core markup language of the World Wide Web. The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) started work on the specification in June 2004 under the name Web Applications 1.0. As of May 2010, HTML5 is still at Working Draft stage in the W3C. Source: Wikipedia.

WHY

HTML4 was ratified in 1999. A lot has changed since then. HTML5 adds elements, events and APIs that modernize the language and transform it from a document-based markup language to an application-based one.
